2024 gas mileage

Plenty of fun in nudging a given vehicle in less optimal directions. It might just be that, less optimal, but we're not here to min-max things anyway. It wasn't worth it in my case, but folks upgrading crossovers to punch above their weight - within reason - are still cool to watch.

I'm personally pretty curious at the difference a DIY air dam would have on the highway and other shenanigans. It'll look funky but science!

I know next time I have a trip and aren't in a rush, I'd want to see if I can just beat 23 MPG in a stretch and stay above 20 overall.

 

That, plus tire pressure, air conditioning usage (many places require it by April), wind (typically worst in April), when the winter/summer fuel blend switch happens in your area, and driving style.

You can drive yourself nuts following fuel economy for just a few runs on a new vehicle.

 

I mean, I wouldn't assume that. But I've seen two of the same year, model and trim get very different mpgs so...

 

Wait till you add a lift, bigger wheels and anything on the roof.......

 

I'm happy to hit 12mpg

 

I didn’t know that KDSS was something to be placed on a list of things that hurt gas mileage, being up there with bigger tires and crossbars.

 

I don't think it's noticeable hurting the mileage, but it's additional weight, so I guess KDSS adds up to it a little. Same as steel bumpers, winches, rock sliders etc.

 

Added beefier engine skid plus my lift, and my ORP has KDSS. Haven’t been on the highway yet, all 2400 miles have been city on my Wildpeaks and I’m averaging 16.3

 

Stock tire size, and after I put the roof rack and ladder on, I am at 16.5 in town and if I can get 18 or 19 on highway I am shocked. Anything over 70mph on and mpg goes off a cliff fast.
Meh...its a 4Runner, it lives on Dino blood.

 

My average is 19.2 mpg (hand calc'd via Fuelly) lifetime, but today it was 79F and calm, so I turned the climate control knob completely off, rolled down every window, including rear, opened the moonroof and just took a leisurely country drive through rural Sussex County DE. I returned 25.3 mpg driving for 48 minutes at about 5 over the speed limit. Caught probably half a dozen lights going through towns of Laurel, Seaford, Bridgeville, Greenwood and Harrington. Admittedly, I have a history of hypermiling in the four TDIs I owned and my current BMW 335D(iesel). It's not hard to beat what's on the Monroney sticker when you know how to drive efficiently.

 

How many miles before first oil change? Just bought a 2024 in April. I'm at 2K. Thanks!!!!

 

Every 10k with whatever synthetic is on sale. Your engine will go 500k miles plus. It will outlast your ownership

 

#6 is not quite accurate. Cruise control is an excellent way to get your EPA estimate. If you want to do better than that, do not use cruise control. My fuel economy goes up 2-3 MPG using my own foot as opposed to the computer.

I would guess considering it is almost identical to the 2024 Land Cruiser, as shown on the comparison chart.
The MPG should be similar, which has been reported at 21/25/23 mpg. On comparable trims of course.

I would say whatever makes you comfortable. My first Toyota was a 1979 Toyota HiLux pickup (2WD). That thing refused to die. At around 250k miles I sold it to a fellow military member. Don't know how long he drove it.
But that was a different time, simpler in many ways and computer chips were not on vehicles then. I have had several Toyotas since, one being a late 1980s or early 1990s Corolla. That car leaked coolant like you wouldn't believe. I bought it at auction in 1998 or so when I just needed a car. It got to where I gave up putting coolant in it, but did make sure it had full oil on the dipstick, and drove it back to work - even on the freeway. That engine just ran. It was still running when I donated it to Pick-N-Pull.

I'm surprised! Are you doing the "accelerate downhill, coast uphill" thing?

 

No, almost the opposite. Cruise control will downshift when going downhill to maintain a constant speed and that engine braking will harm MPG. I've been driving a manual for the past 25 years and I simply applied the technique I've been using for decades to an automatic. I don't hammer the pedal when beginning an uphill segment and I coast once I crest the apex...all while staying within the flow of traffic.

No cruise control programming made can beat a human who knows what they are doing.

 

CC also is very aggressive when returning to speed when pulling out from behind someone who has slowed you down, of up hills.

 

Yup. Cruise control has its uses. If you are making a 1,000 mile trip, CC is great for giving your feet a break...but it is a convenience feature, not a fuel saver feature.

 

And none of these did break in oil changes or used purple platinum plus oil

 

I agree w/ the first 5, but in places like Rt. 81 in VA, the mountains/semi-trucks make the eyes and brain a better cruise control.

 

You should do it now. Break-in (first 1.5K to 2K miles) releases a lot of metal particles (repeatedly confirmed by the oil analysis), but doing FIRST oil change early you will avoid a lot of unnecessary wear from that contaminated oil circulating through your new engine.

 

Please don't attempt to hyper-mile* in a 4Runner. Just don't.

I'm not hypermiling...and I don't own a 4Runner.

Have you ever driven an old Civic SI? It's a long-throw manual with a very rough suspension. What I am doing is driving smoothly so that I (and any passengers) don't get whiplash. I'm not in my 20s anymore and my body can't quite take the pounding that car can dish out if driven as intended. If that happens to save fuel, I'm not going to apologize for that.

 

My goal is always to smile when I drive.
