probably not much better than the 5th gen. here are our stats on our 2018 tundra plat 4x4 5.5ft (249 fillups) vs our 2023 tundra plat 4x4 5.5ft non hv (40 fillups)

mindful that she does remote starts during winters and most of the time its just around town 90% vs 10% highway

 

It looks like the Tundras are averaging 17-18 combined, which is 1-2 mpg below the estimate. I don't know if the estimates have been released for the 4Runner yet, but I'm guessing it will be a similar story.

 

You averaged only 11 and 12 mpg.
Only 1 mpg gain from going from a super reliable engine to a questionable turbo model doesn’t seem worth it to me.

 

On average, the new Tundras are getting about 20% better than the previous generation. Whether or not that's worth it will definitely depend on driving style. I think people who do a lot of driving will probably benefit the most. But, people who don't drive much might not find it worthwhile.

Hopefully reliability ends up being good overall, but it will be tough to hold up to the previous engine's bulletproof reputation.

 

hmmm dont see any issues with our 23. but then again, we only have 6k of mileage and do the 5k maint intervals on it. had a few quirks the first winter, but none have returned and the engine has been great. plus i never use the SS system or radar cruise.

edit : forgot to add, its not about mpg for use, its the creature comforts for the wife since its her daily driver

 

Everyone will be different especially if you spool the turbo all the time

 

wanted to expand on the comforts.

1. heated steering wheel (wife says its a god send compared to the 2018)
2. wireless aa/cp
3. heated seats get way hotter than the 2018
4. interior warms up faster and defrost works better than the 2018
5. stereo way better than the 2018 (but then again the 2018 jbl was the worst jbl in any model toyota ever had)
6. rides better than the 2018 (she says it does, we have avs
7. hud (she loves it, meh for me since i wear polarized glasses)
8. digital rear view mirror (we both like this)
9. 360 view during parking (i use this more than her)
10. auto boards (she didnt like them at first, but she loves them now and complains about my sorely lacking running boards on my 4R)
11. quieter than our 2018 (after i turned off the fake v8)
12. seats are better than the 2018 (more comfort on trips she says)
13. less fatigue on trips to see the grandson (her quote)
14. less stops on trip to see grandson 1 way (1 less tank fill, she has a pet peeve where she can let the tank get below 1/2 during summer or winter)

 

Everyone or just a couple people that drive like grandpas? Look at the fuelly results.

 

lol yeah dont go by my stats. mine are on the left side of the bell curve and dont represent the norm or near the average.

but we are ok with it. it was never meant to be a mpg purchase.

the fuelly avg for a 2023 is 16.9 vs the 2024 at 17

if you filter out just the non hv 2023 the avg is 17.2 per fill up or 18 mpg across mostly 11 tundra non hv

 

I haven't seen the stats on the new sequoia or tundra but was surprised by how much I beat EPA estimates when I had stock 4runner. After the mods, I'm closer to estimates or worse.

That is, if you trust the computer (although manual calculations were within 0.5 MPG). the 2019 4runner was 19 highway? I used to get between 20-22 stock at 75-80.

With the mods it slowly downticked to about 16.5-17 regardless of city or highway

 

I don’t trust the computer much. Ours is typically over optimistic. We generally get 17-19mpg when calculated manually. Most of the time it’s closer to 17 unfortunately.

 

In all honesty, I didn't ponder the thought of getting a 6th gen before purchasing a 2024 a month or so ago. I'm thinking I made the right choice. Sadly, I've all ready antiqued it a bit. Touch up sticks and chew spit rubs it all out.

 

Why do people keep justifying why they don't want the 6th gen. Cool...more for the rest if us

 

It's just human nature (for some). They're trying to reassure themselves about their decision even though deep down they're a little butthurt over it.

 

The 8 speed transmission alone is enough for me to want one

 

Why? The current 5th gen transmission is pretty flawless. It’s not like a third gen Tacoma. Buying a new vehicle just because the transmission has more gears doesn’t make a ton of sense.

 

A 5 speed seems so outdated these days. It's a solid transmission, but more gears usually helps keep it in the powerband when it up-shifts.

I wouldn't buy a vehicle just for the transmission. But, a transmission with better gearing attached to a more powerful motor could be a strong selling point.

These days I’m more concerned about reliability than anything else. I’ve gotten over going fast or looking cool. If the 8 speed is just as reliable and gives better mpgs than I’m all for it.

Well, as a farmer I've always preached "opportunity cost" to my family and friends. We always chew the fat about tillage practices and input costs but at the end of day, it really comes down to how satisfied you are in life. The most dissatisfied folks I know preach about how their decisions are somewhat superior to those that have taken a different path. Time loves a hero gents, if he's real he's a legend. Is there any chance that those bat shit crazy resale values on the old style Land Cruisers could become a thing for “Old School” 4runners…after they go turbo and never look back? Not that I would buy a 5th gen because of that reason, but it’d be a nice bonus. I’d probably only consider turbo charged anything if I lived in higher elevations, I never really crave speed or fast pickup.

 

I found a 84 FJ60 in a corn field and bought it for a $1000.00 Father son project, we donated the profits to charity. We were shocked at the sale price.

 

I hope it goes the other way and my value drops some... Haha. I keep my vehicles 10+years and the high resale on my Tacoma and T4r is killing me where I live with taxes.

 

Oh my fault, I was thinking of the FJ Cruiser but said Land Cruiser by accident. Wow can’t believe it was 10 years ago now that it was discontinued.

 

Doubt that ever happens for the 5th gen since they’ve been making them for 15 years. I bet the price will go down if anything.

 

Someone here just paid $21,000 for a 2014 SR5. After 10 years they still worth 50%? Another member has a 1997 4Runner and it’s still around $10-$12k. I don’t think the 6th gen will severely affect the 5th gen price.

 

Dude, I just went through with my 4Runner purchase!! So I could pretty much guarantee you that you’re right lol, I have always been a financial dark cloud anything that I touch plummets. If I bought something else the prices may have doubled lol. That’s cool though I just wanna drive it mostly!
