Safety wire? Why? That "O" ring provides all of the self-locking friction that you need. I bet that nobody has reported a filter housing come loose as long as it was installed far enough that it doesn't leak.

Plenty of filter bowls on aircraft turbine engines are not safety wired and never come loose.

I was wondering what that was all about. No need to make a more complex than it needs to be process even more complicated.

4 years on military helicopters, 8 years of Comm aircraft component overhaul, another 4 years flight line and hanger work, most filters are wired.
Aluminum housings supposedly torqued to 18 ft lb.s yeah.
All the dealers are over-torquing housing and plugs just to be Richards?, would we know if they see loose housings ?.

I'll do mine for my piece o mind ;-)

44 years of aircraft maintenance on everything from B-52s to 22 years on the airlines and the rest on corporate jets and Bell helicopters. Just saying. But I get where you are coming from.

I never open the bottom screw on the filter housing.. I drain the oil pan and then open the filter very slowly and tilt it in the container.. no issues...
