    Hey All,

Doing the Toyota Roundup in the San Juans in July. Will be the first time there.

How much tread depth on a KO2 would you deem good for running those trails?

I've got a KO2 set w/ just 30k. Don't have their depths offhand but the knobs aren't as tall anymore and they do appear less "grippy". Wondering if purchasing a new set is warranted. I do know a fresh set would inspire more confidence.

    Thanks

Never going to get the same answer.

I doubt anyone measures thread depth before they hit the trails. Maybe check air pressure. Plus its gonna depend on what trail.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

30k is just over the half way point for KO2's. I think they usually last 60k miles. The answer is all about the trails you'll be on.

If you're going to do actual rock climbing, you'll slip a lot and I probably wouldn't risk it.
If you're just going on dirt/loose gravel or climbing a grade that isn't too steep, you should be fine.

Ha! I have the same issue. In June, I'm taking a trip up to Idaho from San Diego. Likely around 3,000 miles in total. I have 4/32s on the rears and 5/32s on the fronts. Obviously, a rotation is needed. I won't be putting a lot of miles on it before then, so I think I'll risk it, but still thinking about it.

One other thing to consider is how old are the tires? I like to have good rubber on trips like this, and would switch them out, then if you felt bad about having a lot of rubber left switch them back and burn the rest off when you get back home. JMHO

I won't be doing anything super technical, just a lot of fear inducing shelf roads. Some off camber. For those familiar these are the trails I've signed up for. In order for that Wed, Thurs. and Friday: Bullion King and Clear Lakes "rated easy", Stony Pass to Kite Lake "also easy" and the "hardest" on the last day Friday Imogene (Ouray to Telluride) rated medium. I've already purchased a set of -10 offset SCS F5s to widen the track over stock Off Road wheels to help w/ the tippy-ness off my moderate lift.

Good idea and yeah I do feel bad of just wasting the KO2 tread. Do you know if I need alignments between switching wheels? I am getting one done with the new wheels I'm installing. Do I need another to go back to the old wheels and tires?

I would get brand new KO2s and in the E load. A flat or two would ruin your fun trip, don't take even a small risk. Imogene and Black Bear are rough. Keep the old KO2s at home and use them when you are back from this fun trip. 4 tires don't take a lot of space.

You do not need to get an alignment when you swap back.
